Reviews for MATH009C

Difficulty: 6.13 / 10.0

Basically unrelated to 9A or 9B so beware

Not bad if you can study for it, sick curves

It's known to be a tricky course but honestly if you study the theorems enough to where you know them like the back of your hand you'll be fine.

This class mainly covers power series and is an easy A for most people, especially if you took AP Calculus BC in high school. Two quizzes, one midterm and a final. Do your homework and you will be fine. Ended with an A- because I forgot one formula which basically costed my A. The midterm and final were similar to the practice ones given by the professor so that should be your main mode of studying.

Nothing like 9A or 9B. New concepts make it hard to apply anything you previously learned here. As long as you pay attention and attend lectures and practice, you'll be good.

Ziv Ran is probably the worst professor in the 9 series as he tends to overcomplicate simple concepts in lecture while giving difficult problems in exams. Quizzes and homework are easy and make up a decent chunk of your grade.

Had Dong, basically gives you midterm and final the lecture before

Professor Gindi is horrible at teaching. The quarter ended and we were missing 3 weeks worth of material.

Fall 2018 Quarter - Professor Gindi Our midterm average was a 70.8 IIRC - he said since our midterm average was above a 70, he wouldn't curve it... The final screwed me over. Cannot miss a single lecture as some of the stuff he goes over in class is on the midterm/final and isn't found in the textbook... overall this class was extremely difficult in my opinion. There is a pretty large curve though (90 A, 85 A-, 80 B+ etc.)

Costello is great, but can spend a lot of time on the theory and proofs behind certain concepts.

Material isn't too hard, but the class difficulty is dependent upon the professor you have. Midterm and final was similar to the practice problems given to us. If you have Kadriye Nur Saglam, I'd try to steer clear. She fell behind schedule frequently and had to rush through the material to finish the course before the final exam.

I had Dr. Diaz. He's fairly good at teaching and he's more than willing to help you with any questions that you may have or if you're stuck on a homework problem. Math009C is strange at first because it's NOTHING like Math009B or 9A and it's very stressful because you're going to be like "what have I gotten myself into." My advice is just realize that this class is 75% memorization and 25% math manipulation and start memorizing as soon as you can... I eventually got used to it in the end but even toward the midterm I was stressed out about this class.

Took it with John Baez. He is a very theoretical professor and doesn’t teach the best. I did very well in 9A and 9B but I had to fight for a B in this class. Always clicker questions every lecture but discussion quizzes were always on the clicker which i thought was pretty cool.

Midterm mostly had questions from in class examples or from the written homework.

Difficult class. Taylor polynomials and series are absolutely brutal and will destroy you if you do not understand them. Zhenghe Zhang is a great professor and if you go to office hours he will definitely help you. The course material is difficult but you can get an A if you put in a lot of effort. Make sure to get 100% on quizzes as it's based off the hw. The midterm is 30% and the final is 50%, so you really have to study hard and make sure you do a lot of practice problems and not make any silly mistakes.

Took it with Mahesh. He has easy midterms and finals. the curve is preset (A+ 95-100 A 90-95 A- 85-90). his lectures are extremely boring and useless so do problems out of the book as much as you can. quizzes cover the really easy problems of each concept. they are given out during discussion so go to discussion!!

avoid song zilong, accent is understandable but i spend a heavy amount of time trying to understand wtf hes saying and dont really have the brain power at 8am to actually comprehend it. he has a tablet for notetaking that he projects and will switch to a new page with complete disregard for if anyone is still unfinished copying down on what he wrote, which is often. webwork is also due at 10pm and not 11:59pm which is a huge pain in the ass

Took it with Zilong Song, would not recommend because he has a very static voice and just writes on his device and goes over a bunch of examples without really explaining the concept well. The first half of the class isn’t too bad you just need to memorize the different types of convergence tests but the second half really picks up. I didn’t take Calc BC in hs so I found this class kinda hard but if you just watch YouTube videos on the concepts covered (I recommend organic chemistry tutor) you should be fine.

Avoid discussion for Math 009C with Ruoyi Wang at all costs. I had her discussion over zoom. She consistently started classes late and always talked like she was dreading the class. When asked questions, she failed to be helpful and just expected everyone to figure it out.

Too many proofs that don't lead anywhere. Ziv Ran spent like 30 minutes of the class trying to break down these 1 sentence theorems instead of doing practice problems and teaching you how to do the homework. Honestly if you get him just use Organic Chemistry tutor on Youtube and pray you have a good TA to explain some of the convoluted homework problems

I had Prof. Po-Ning Chen and he's a fair test maker. His study guides are really good preperation for the midterm and final. His lectures are a little fast and hard to understand at first. My TA Aaron Goodwin was a godsend and helped me understand a lot of the material. Ask the professor questions during lectures so that he slows down but he does post his slides after so make sure to review those.

DO NOT TAKE WITH ZIV RAN unless you are good at math and can self teach you can survive and get a good grade. Ran has huge curves bc a MAJORITY of the class could not keep up with the material and concepts. the class was mainly taught by the tas and they would hold hour long study sessions outside of discussion because a lot of us were struggling. i had a 68 in the class after the final and got a b- so the curve is humongous. if you are confident in math and don’t need the help of a professor you can use the fact that his curve is large to your advantage and get an A with a 80% but if you are like me and struggled with 9b and 9a do not take with ziv

The material is pretty much the same as AP Calc BC, the professor (Ziv Ran) is pretty generous with the curves. quiz every week but is super easy if pay attention in discussions.

Took this class with professor Max Hill. He is a really solid lecturer and generally made the class a pleasure to take. In my opinion, the content is WAAAAY easier than 009B.

Took in Spring 2024. If you taken AP Calc BC in high school, this should help you in the class, but there's still a lot of work to do. You have to go to class, no matter the professor and ask questions so you don't feel stuck. You're TA should help a lot in making things easier to understand, and yes there are derivatives and integration but thats in the final part of the course, before that is series and sequences, then its polar coordinates which are to me the difficult part of the class cause you have to know you're trigonometry with the Unit Circle, so freshen up on that or memorize the Unite Circle at least cause you gotta know what sinx and cosx are on it to get the problem right. My class had biweekly quizzes, HW, a midterm, and final, and most people did really bad on the midterm with a 58% average so they gave us extra credit worksheet to make up for it so do the EC if you know you're struggling. Have someone help you with the problems or go to TA or you're professor's office hours cause that's the best thing you can do for yourself if you feel stuck or confused on how to go about a problem. Again KNOW THE UNIT CIRCLE, it'll save you in the long run.

Took with Matthew Harper in Spring 24. It was apparently his last quarter here teaching as an instructor as he was transfering somewhere else. He was a pretty good prof and the best yet out of all the MATH009 series IMO. I did struggle a bit in the course but overall it was just me needing to memorize and grasp the concepts more with practice. Only negative was needing to stay the whole duration of the exam.

Naderiyan was very generous with his grading, plenty of EC opportunities. The tests were moderately fair too, the whole class generally did pretty well.
