Lopez-Garcia is a great professor
similar to high school AP calculus
Fernando Lopez-Garcia was a good professor and good looking too. I understood everything until we got to divergence and convergence. Homework was graded fairly, but the quizzes were not given any partial credits.
Avoid Chenxu He as your professor. First 3/4 of class were easy, but towards the end it became moderately difficult. He also doesn't let you use notes or cheatsheets in exams, which is a let down considering this class was mostly utilizing and memorizing identities.
Prof. Theerakarn was definitely new to teaching. He did not explain well to a point where there everyone was confused and one girl would constantly ask him "I did not understand any of that, can you explain the whole thing over again?" Midterm was just like the practice midterm. The final had a few curveballs. Midterm and final were pretty easy if you understood the material and the TAs graded really leniently.
If you've taken AP Calculus AB in high school, you know a good portion of the material already. Know how to do the practice midterms and finals, as they are a good representation of the actual exams you will take. I had Jose Gonzalez, and he is probably one of the best professors I've had so far.
Like most other math classes at this level, if you're good at running through problems without making careless errors and can understand the concepts and how they apply to the actual formulas, you should do alright. First half of the class is just the FTC, U-Subs, and integration by parts, second half is application problems and stuff like trig sub. Still hard enough, but not GPA-ruining if you're willing to put in the work.
Had Po-ning Chen, Hw was super easy, one midterm/final that are extremely similar to the practice tests that he provides
Hard tests, professors are hit or miss on quality depending on who you get. Tests are different between sections and difficulty also varies by professor. Every question missed on the final is half a grade down so it is hard to keep an A
Had Po-Ning Chen. He was a pretty good lecturer, posted his slides and lecture notes online after class. Unlimited tries on homework questions. I took AP Calculus AB in high school, and most of the stuff I learned in 9B, I had already learned in high school. Midterm was extremely, extremely easy. Final was a bit more difficult than midterm in my opinion.
Fall 2019. Took with Liwei Chen. If you took AP Calculus in High School, class is very easy because it's material from AP Calc. Online HW was easy if you understood the material, but annoying. Quizzes during discussions which were mildly difficult. 1 Midterm and 1 Final.
Took it with John Baez. Very passionate teacher and explains the concepts in depth. Put in the effort and go to office hours for help. Homework is online and tests are almost identical to practice exams. Ended with an A+
Had prof qi zhang spring 2020, aka corona season lol. He went really fast, spent too much time on easy concepts and too little time on the harder ones. this class is very straightforward. webwork due every week, microtutorials, and a final for me. its really not bad at all
Had Po-Ning Chen. The class was really easy if you've taken AP Calc in highschool. The only thing I didn't like was how the finals felt compared to everything else in the class. Much harder than the rest of the stuff but might've just not studied hard enough. Would recommend overall.
I had Sarah Yeakel. You have to make sure you attend to class, watch YuJa videos, do hw, and do the weekly worksheets to stay on top of the class. There’s also weekly quizzes and microtutorials.
I had Dr. Wee Liang Gan, He is very kind and will answer emails right away. Sometimes he does not explain context? To avoid confusion, pre-view the textbook before the class. it takes about 15 minutes to do so, and makes the class easier to understand. He gave no midterm or final, but he gave 10, 10 minute quizzes for each chapter. The quizzes are a bit rushed, but it is not that hard. Just review the homework questions by finishing them in a spread out manner, then reviewing them the day before the test. It is not a hard class to get an A in. If you are ever confused, send an email. Be careful on quizzes and take organized notes, because quizzes are open book/note. The class structure is organized and easy to understand.
Had this class with John Baez. Would definitely recommend him, as long as you have a solid Math9A (or AP Calculus AB) knowledge, this class is mostly a breeze.
With Gonzalex I thought that he was super helpful and very kind but his exams and the material are no joke. He has 2 midterms which have 3 questions that are a and b questions, 1 final so you need to study hard for these since 1 answer wrong brings your test grade down a whole letter. Had webwork problems for the homework. If you're good at calculus this class should be very easy
I had Proffesor Dugan for this course. The quizzes and midterm were easy to do. However, the final was worth 45% of your grade and it was extremely hard. I went from an A- to a B- because of the final.
Winter 22. Had Po-Ning Chen. He is a good professor. Midterm was very similar to the practice midterm. His hw and quizzes were also similar to in class problems. Final was not hard but it was not on the same easy level as midterm.
I had Professor Ishan and he's a great professor. He explains everything very well in class, answers questions, is helpful in office hours, and is pretty clear about what he expects. The actual course isn't bad at all, you just need to make sure you keep up with the pace, and continue doing homework.
if you took AP calc A this class is super easy. Jose gonzalez is amazing professor. online lectures and the midterm and final are 100x easier than the homework
Hard class for me but easy to get away with not going to class/
misha potomkin -- if you took ap, the material will be fairly easy to understand. he provides good notes on canvas and tells you what will be on quizzes + midterms, usually also easier than the assignments on webwork.
max hill ( winter 24 ) -- the professor is extremely soft spoken and is difficult to hear + pay attention ( especially at 8 in the morning ) as he does not use a mic, and does not speak for minutes at a time while writing. the course itself is not terribly difficult. the quizzes are simple and easy to get full scores on if you take simply 15-30 mins before them to study the given questions. if you understand the homework and given practice questions, you will have no problem on the midterm + final. weekly quizzes. 1 midterm, 1 final.
Took in Winter 2024 with Jialin Wang, a PHD student so not a professor. Shes very young and understanding so she made the class easier than I believe most professors would have done. Stay on top of you're HW, do well in each quiz in discussion, do the practice midterms and finals. This class is hard if you don't know how to integrate or go about a problem, but when you do it becomes 2nd nature. This is essentially AP Calc AB if you've taken it, if not then AP videos online will help you so give them a watch cause they cover essentially everything in this class. Ask questions and practice, Jialin is a good teacher in my opinion and does explain clearly, but do sit up close because she writes on the board not on a screen. if you don't have her, still ask questions and practice, thats the only thing you can do in this class.
Took with Qi Zhang in Winter 23. IMO try to AVOID him because his lectures are really useless. 75% of the class didn't show up after the first few lectures and then the class is full during the midterm and final. I essentially went to lecture for the first 3-4 weeks to reason to myself that going is better than not but eventually stopped going after that. Just read the textbook to teach myself the homework and looked at practice tests before the exams. Passed with a B but not a good experience.
Homework is due twice a week, midterm was much easier than the homework. Quizzes are a bit more difficult but they're not worth much out of the whole grade. Jose is an amazing teacher and explains it in terms that are simple to understand. He's very funny and interactive as well. The TA Ryan explains it in ways completely different than the professor but still wants you to do it his way, which makes discussions a bit annoying but it's a very easy class overall.
