Specifically with Gerhard Gierz, the exams are open EVERYTHING even internet and the questions are literally taken from his homework! I got an A+ and showed up to like 70% of the classes but some of my friends who never showed up also got As
Never took calculus before and it kicked my ass. Got a C. Gerard Gierz, I believe was his name, let students use their electronic devices for the exam. I didn't utilize it properly because I did not know what the hell I was doing
Probably my easiest class this quarter even though I didn't take calculus in high school. I had Vasilakopoulou and she taught pretty well, even if it was a bit fast. Pay attention and ask questions, it will make sense.
Kadriye Nur Saglam is not a good professor; cannot explain things clearly. You're better off reading the textbook and never going to lecture. I heard she is better at teaching during office hours than lecture, though.
Attend lecture and sections. Both help out with getting material review. Class is exam and quiz heavy. If you need help there is many guides online and tools. There is review packets online that are extremely useful.
I really liked having professor benson. He assigned hardly any homework, and his exams seemed very fair (if not a little easy). He will stare into your soul
Brian Benson - Very enthusiastic and energetic teacher. Teaches us why things works and makes us show work and provide reasoning instead of plugging in numbers. He made the final exam and midterm much easier than the practice one posted by the department. If you already took AB, this class will be easy. Class average on midterms were around an 88% and i got a 102% on them.
If you have prior calculus experience, it’s relatively easy and a good review.
Took it with Dr. Zilong Song (this was his first year teaching I think). He was pretty good but he had an accent that some may find hard to understand. Do at least the first and last problems of webwork and MAKE SURE to be up to date on microtutorials because those come in clutch at the end for bonus points. Midterms and finals are pretty easy, almost exactly like class examples and webwork but are not curved. go to discussion if you don't get something. study for discussion quizzes, they add up over time.
Took it with Professor Song, he writes out all of the notes for you and emails them. Just do the hw and review the notes and you should be fine.
I took this class with Professor Qi Zhang. He has an accent, but it wasn't too hard to understand him. He's also nice and cares about his students. It was my first time taking calc and I ended up with an A. Qi's lectures can be all over the place sometimes, but he still gets his point across. His office hours help if you don't understand something. For the homework, if you run out of tries, you can email him for more. Quizzes are given out during discussion; the problems depend on who your TA is. The midterm wasn't too bad, but you need to put in the time and effort to study. Because of the coronavirus, the final was online and open notes, but it would have been closed notes and in-person.
Dr. Wang is extremely tough to follow. Don’t even bother going to lecture.
I had Professor Xin Yang Fall 2020, he's super nice and always gives students access to lectures and lecture notes for the entire quarter which I found really helpful for the midterms. Considering the rigor of this course I honestly don't think it gets better than this cuz he explains everythinggg in depth and does it pretty well. He's also super reasonable and understanding. So try to get him if you take this course :) In terms of content, if you're a freshman and you didn't take any AP Calc courses but placed into this, its definitely gonna be overwhelming. There's always gonna be kids who know more than you since they had more experience with it. You can do well even if you procrastinate but beware that it's a LOT of cramming. Make sure you study for the quizzes because it's easy to forget considering how much we have to remember. Be attentive during lecture, you miss one thing and can get lost and then needa rewatch it. Also, he monitors the chat so you don't have to speak to participate. Overall, a rigorous course but he's a really good professor so you'll be in good hands :)
I had prof Xin Yang and we was a super sweet prof. He didn't take attendance, but lectures were super helpful. Tests and quizzes were all open note, but had some tricky questions that required you to apply concepts you had learned from the notes. It helps to have friends in the class who can help you if you get stuck on a homework problem or if you go to office hours. Also ask a lot of questions because it really helps.
Prof Gan - the best! No midterms, no finals. Just do the hw and quizzes and you're all set. Definitely take Wee Lian Gan. Just take him. !
If you took calculus in HS then thiss class should be nothing. I had Javier Gonzalez Anaya as my professor and he was amazing. I definitely recommend taking it with him.
2021 FALL ONLINE: As a person who has no special interested in math, this course is really hard and almost make me hate math. I am thinking the main reason comes from the professor (Ziv Ran) itself. He is a nice guy but horrible in explaining and simplifying the learning materials. I ended up not attending lectures and watch tons of YouTube videos and self studying. The midterm and final exam are nothing similar to the practice one that he provided. If you are not a big brain or a productive learner, avoid taking any math class with him or your GPA suffers.
I had the class with Javier Gonzales. The class was one of the easiest that I took in my fall quarter. This class is mainly about differentiation, which is not a hard topic at all to grasp conceptually. Add on top of that the fact that you get a page long cheat sheet for the midterm and the final. The homework is done through webwork and you get 5 attempts per question, but the questions are very manageable and is good practice for the midterms and the finals. The midterm and final combined make up around 70% of your grade so make sure you study for them. The midterm was extremely easy but the final was a big step up. But there was a huge curve at the end of the quarter and one of my friends went from a D to a B. The professor is very understanding and nice.
Took with Professor Javier Anaya Gonzalez Fall 2021. He is FANTASTIC and gives fantastic lecturers. He does his best to understand and help students. We had videos with imbedded questions in it called micro tutorials -- those were horrible though. He didn't have a ton of control over the program itself so that was difficult. HW was done through webwork (free) and you had 3 chances to get a question correct. My TA was really great too (Daley Thomale). She's very helpful and nice -- go to her office hours! Quizzes were given weekly but with some exceptions (total of 7 quizzes). The professor allowed us a cheat sheet for the midterm and final. The midterm is 1000% doable and can be very easy! Review HW, notes, and sample exams to succeed. The final was much harder though; after feedback from students, he curved it. He's always open to feedback and remembers you.
Professor Gonzalez. Easy make sure you pay attention and take notes it will help you in the long run. Midterms and Exams are relatively easy. He gives you practice for midterms and exams to help you prepare. Overall Great professor and would 10/10 recommend,
Content is pretty much only limits and derivatives, so fairly easy if you took Calculus in high school. Prof Feng Xu was not good at explaining the content at all. He does practice problems from the textbook during lecture and assigns weekly homework (not a lot of work at all). He also holds review sessions before the midterm and final that are fairly similar to the actual exams. The final and midterm together are worth 75% of your grade but getting an A is doable.
Took the class with Xin Yang spring 2021. The only math class in my whole life where I have earned an A. It was my first calculus class as well so I feel like that shows how well yang teaches. Best most no nonsense teacher ive ever had. simple straight to the point. he also wrote notes before hand for us and posted them before class so we could follow along during class without having to rush and write. tests were extremely fair even tho i did struggle on them. Overall super fair and gave us everything we needed to succeed. Only math class at UCR where i felt the TA didnt carry the whole course.
Had Professor Yat Poon. He was honestly an amazing professor; one of my favorites at the moment. He had a good sense of humor, the midterm wasn't necessarily too bad, mainly because the concepts at first were pretty easy to comprehend, as well as he nailed the course material in your head very well. The final is alright, just need to study for maybe an hour and I'm positive you will do amazing. If I could have this professor again, I totally would love to.
My teacher really didn't explain shit. I really suggest not going to class but spending that time doing khan academy and videos because ucr professors and terrible at explaining.
Took in Fall 23 with Pallav Goyal. For my first ever calculus class I felt like I was confused most of the quarter. I did very well in highschool math (besides during COVID) and scored well on the SAT. I guess the different learning and teaching style was not welcoming for my first quarter at UCR. I did pull through with a A- most likely due to him dropping a few of our lowest assignments but I only remember this class as me being the most confused I have ever been in a long time.
I had Eastham -- I think she's super understanding, and her grading system works in your favor. If you study a lot on your own and ask questions, you will pass! She doesn't teach with slides and attendance is mandatory, but I honestly loved her and her vibes
