Bonni and Sharon. The dynamic duo. This was a great class. I've heard bad things about ENGL001C, this is the alternative for BCOE majors. And it's not that bad either. You can tell both of them are passionate about their topics and like to share their lives with the class. They take turns alternating lectures and present material relevant to life. The first half is pretty much introducing the concepts and exercises, the second half of the class is producing a technical spec to standards. Extra credit is given, both before the midterm and after the midterm. I believe in our quarter 300 extra points could be earned by doing all the extra credit. If you do everything and put in a decent amount of effort, this class shouldn't be too bad. The workshops were often only 30 minutes or less. Time consuming, but difficulty wise not too bad.
There's a lot of writing in this class and you will work in groups for the quarter-long functional specification project. If you struggle with essays, this might be a challenge. Otherwise, it doesn't require much effort.
Overall, the content of the class is super easy, but the professors make it extremely annoying. Group Assignments: PRAY that you're assigned quarter-long group mates that are competent and FUCK YOU if you're the group mate that makes everyone else do all the work :( Beware the writing guidelines. I can't stress enough, for group assignments make sure all members of your group follow the writing guidelines or everyone in the group loses points. I easily could have gotten an A in the class, but I had to do all of the heavy lifting for 3 other people in my group and couldn't focus on writing my extra credit essays. Essays: Long, tedious, and professors are annoyingly strict on their "writing guidelines". Very straight forward though. Set aside like a Saturday morning to bang out an essay and you'll be fine. Extra Credit: DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT. The class offers so many opportunities to make up any points you lost because of dumb mistakes on assignments. It's entirely possible to skip the written part of the final if you do all of the extra credit.
This class is so annoying. 1000 word essays due every other week, and they're so nitpicky over every little thing. Do as much of the extra credit as you can to avoid getting out of the final. I did it, but I got less than half the points. It was like one little thing. Sure, I might have missed half the prompt but I should have gotten at least 1 point for what I did write. You'll also be working in groups for a good chunk of it, so make sure you're working with someone who's competent.
Class was a JOKE. Essays were ezpz. Labs were done in under 5 min. Follow the writing guidelines and you're chillin. The only somewhat difficult part of this class was the presentation. But even that was only five minutes. Do the extra credit and you can skip part of the final. Fr do it. Lectures were not suuuper helpful but Bonni and Sharon are kinda cool to listen to. Easy A. Just do the work and you're fine.
The class is easy. Essays are tedious, but for the most part they seem lenient on grading. Just follow the writing guidelines and start early. Group assignments aren't that bad. The work is much shorter than the essays if everyone does their part. Just make sure that everyone follows the writing guidelines and does their part correctly. My group was competent overall, so we got away with doing assignments during the day they were due, but if you don't trust your group you should start early. Do all the extra credit. You can skip the written portion of the final entirely if you get all the points from them. The written portion was around 3,500 words for my class. It's still not fun to do even if you have over a week to do it. All ECs combined likely have the same word count as the final, but you probably don't want to do this final when you'll have other finals to study for.
Class is really easy. It just takes a lot of work. Final is 3,500 words. Midterm is 1,500 words. Week 0 you're assigned a 1,000 word essay. There's presentations, homework like weekly, etc. It's just very tedious to do but not difficult whatsoever (unless English is not your first language, then you might be in some trouble). Just make sure you follow their guidelines religiously. They will dock your grade mercilessly for each assignment if you don't follow their rules. Also, there is group work and a stand-up presentation involved. The group is assigned in like week 2 or something and you work with them until week 10. If you get lazy/inattentive group members like I did, your grade will suffer and there's not much you can do about it. You might just have to suck it up and make up for their apathy by doing twice the work. The groups are assigned randomly and you cannot switch members, barring extreme circumstances like a member is straight up refusing to do anything, etc.
Follow the writing guidelines and you'll do great. There is only one large assignment (presentations around midterms) and everything else is pretty easy. If you're up for it, do all the extra credit offered. It should let you skip the final, which is a huge 3000 word essay. Bonni and Sharon can be a bit much, but if you can ignore their "LOOK WE'RE OLDER THAN YOU AND THEREFORE KNOW MORE THAN YOU" attitude, the class is entertaining enough.
Pay extremely close attention to every rule they mention. It's obvious what they want, but if you don't do it then your grade will suffer
Sharon and Bonni are good profs who know what they're talking about. The course isn't hard, but luckily you learn a good deal of work advice. As long as you submit your assignment with on time with the correct file name, you'll be fine.
It's a lot of writing. Follow their guidelines on the writing requirements and do ALL the extra credit. Easy A.
Like others have said above, just pray you get paired with people that actually follow their writing guidelines otherwise your grade will suffer in the group assignments as a result. Do as many of the extra credit assignments as you possibly can so you can skip one or two essays on the final and start writing those final essays as early as possible. As long as you follow their writing guidelines you should be in good shape. And make sure you name your files properly, you don't want to end up like my partner who did 1500 words worth of extra credit just to get no points because he forgot to change the file name.
If you do all the extra credit and follow writing guidelines you will get an A. Bonni and Sharon have the most entertaining lectures and while the rules for the class seem odd, they are easy to follow.
One of the most tedious and time consuming courses I have ever taken in my entire life. The amount of work you have to do is ridiculous, and around the last week is absolute nightmare. Also you cant choose your partners, so you better pretty you get paired with someone who is a competent writer.
Look, you're just going to have to learn to suck it up with Bonnie and Sharon. This means absolutely no complaining or whining because it will just hurt you. They are the only people that are teaching 180W at UCR. When they grade your writing, they can accuse of you absolutely anything and you can't really do anything about it. They will have a fair share of criticism to give you. Remember to follow the writing guidelines they give you, and naming convention of your file. There is a group project that you will do throughout the entire class, and hopefully you get paired with a good team. If you don't get a good group, you may be in trouble. It's relatively easy to pass the class, just don't be a pain in the butt. Do every extra credit assignment they throw at you, and you can skip the final. I also want to add that these two are woke. You'll get deducted if you aren't inclusive to all groups. Godspeed to anyone taking these two.
A lot of assignments with Bonnie and Sharon but it's pretty easy to get an A if you follow the guidelines closely.
Everytime I think start overthinking about how a class I will take is going to be hard, I reminisce of this class. This class is honestly dumb, and the only key takeaway is active writing. Other than that, be prepared to spend all your time in this class writing! Its an "easy" A if you do all the extra credit :)
People understandably like to complain about this class because the profs do not hold your hand. If you don't follow the assignment requirements you will lose LOTS of points and thats that. Just make sure to read the entire assignment spec. They are very clear. As someone wisely said, follow the guidelines and youre chillin. Workload is light at first but really ramps up towards the end, finals week was rough.
