pretty basic english class. 4 essays on various topics.
Just write your essays and put at least some effort into them and you'll pass fairly easily.
It was difficult because I hate essays
Easy class. Do not slack off on your assignments because every point counts in this class. Definitely go to office hours if you need help on your essays as the professor is extremely helpful and will guide you on how to improve your essay.
The class is more laid back and open in comparison to the remedial classes before it. Class participation is important, get to know your professor and classmates to make class better. Quizzes are only partial and not too big. Essays are a big part of the class, don't forget to complete them. Turning in work late frequently, stagnates your grade.
4 Essays, if you mess up you are done basically. We got the final ahead of time and wrote it in class. Really easy
It consists mainly of fitting 4 very important essays in 1 quarter. Lectures and classwork usually serve to teach or relate back to the current essay. Do your best on the essays, because each one is almost a quarter of your grade. The class is also a class where C- = fail, so don't even think you can skip doing 1 essay.
Dr. Spaise is very hard on grammar. Go to her office hours to review your essay and you’ll get A’s on your paper.
Queen is a fun class to take. Types of essay, pretty interesting starter class
Not a lot of reading, but a decent amount of last-minute essay writing
Essays were graded pretty harshly for my professor... I got the same score for all my essays give or take 1-2% so...
Essays make up nearly 80% of you overall grade. The final was an easy A. Took the class with Allie Arend and she provided make-ups for every single essay!
Had Dr. Smedley. She is very nice and friendly and encourages you to attend office hours. I find it helpful to go to her office hours. Gives helpful constructive criticisms.
Kim Turner. GO to office hours. And if she likes you, then you will do well. if she doesnt then try to make her like you
I had Dr. Spaise. Definitely go to office hours if you struggle, it was a basic English class though. Not much in class writing, but a strong focus on grammar and she assigns a few worksheets.
Brittany Roberts is a great instructor. Super helpful and well-spoken. Her class is easy-going and the homework is easy too. Most of the time, the homework is to read and prepare for essays. There are a total of 4 papers, with different word counts and they are worth different amounts. Her grading is far and she provides a lot of helpful feedback.
for innes, super easy. easy grader, rambles on and on in class
Go to office hours, its ridiculous how much easier the class will be. Had a TA rather than a prof, pretty easy A. Not a lot of busywork which was nice. Straight up: 4 essays & an in class essay final.
Get Sarah Buckner!! She’s such a sweetheart and she’s not a super hard grader. Understands that students have it hard so is a little easier compared to other Eng profs
I never really understood what English TAs look for when grading essays. The class is pretty boring and essay prompts are sort of vague and hard to write about. The class will destroy your grade if you suck at writing essays as 90% of your grade is based on those. Hope that you get an easy TA/professor to teach your class.
I had professor Vasquez and she was awesome. I usually hate going to English, but I actually enjoyed having her. The class has a heavy weight on essays so make sure you go to office hours and get help. Otherwise, it’s not that bad of a class
Had Prof. Gurnett, She really cares about helping you improve your grade. 3 essays, 1 midterm, 1 final, read 3 books. There is a specific format in which you are to write your essays, even if your essay is good it will get an F if not in that format. Pretty hard grader and participation is extremely important. Near the end of the quarter you will be allowed to revise one of your essays.
Jaquelyn Vasquez is an amazing teacher! She replies very fast to emails and is always super helpful during office hours! Just be sure not to procrastinate on your essays :)
Four essays and one final :)
Pretty standard English class, reading isn't necessarily too important as long as you get the main points and sound like you know what you're talking about.
VanZandt is the best prof ever she is so nice and understanding and doesn't put a lot of pressure on students. 4 essays, one final based on the book she has you read. Even though she is nice she grades essays fairly hard so make sure you have good essays, those will bring you down if you aren't careful. She let us revise our lowest essay which helped me a lot so if she offers that to you don't pass on the opportunity.
jones is laidback but he puts effort into teaching what exactly should be in your essay, and he is lenient on grading essays
I took the class with Grant Palmer, he was a super nice and chill guy. Would definitely recommend you to take his class.
Took the class with Nolan Goetzinger, super helpful professor. Went to all of his office hours to have my essays looked over and his feedback is basically free points added to your essay. I believe there were four essays plus the final, so the class is pretty fast paced, about 2 weeks per essay. Don't buy the St Martins Guide since you can easily find free versions online.
Took it with Cline Fall 2020. Super nice and caring professor who helped a lot if you went to office hours (she will tell you straight up how to improve your essays). The assignments were easy and interesting. Occasionally there will be a "pop quiz" but sometimes she hints at it the class before, so show up to every class. Majority of your grade is essays, but they are not hard. You read a novel towards the end of the quarter which wasn't difficult either (just keep on top of the readings). Final is comprehensive of things you learned in SMG and also from the novel. Cline grades easy and is super chill. Take the class with her if you can.
TRY TO GET Alexander Allaport! He’s a really fun teacher and he’s very helpful and considerate when it comes to grading!
Amanda Oliver is understanding, class is easy, participation is not required, gives u extension if you ask for it, attendance not required
I had Terry Spaise and she’s a relatively easy professor. She’ll give you extensions if you need it. Other than that, grading is mostly based on 3 essays and the final.
Took the class during Fall 2020(online b/c of covid) with grad student Miranda Steege, if you can try to get her! She structured the class very well and gave really helpful feedback on essays. Her paper prompts were also very well organized and listed every point you needed to hit to at least get a B. 4 essays, so if you screw up on one it'll be hard to come back from it, however if you go to her office hours she will be really helpful in telling you everything you need to fix and improve on to get a good grade. Final was a pretty short and easy take-home reflection essay.
I had this class with Stamp and he gives really good feedback. We had 4 essays and a final essay (2-3 pages) that were 15%, 20%, 20%, 25%, and 15% of our grade. Ask questions about your own essay or just questions in general during class and office hours. Very helpful when providing feedback and suggestions+advice. Doesn't really say much in the comments on your essay but if you ask for feedback during office hours he will most definitely help you. I had a 65% on my second essay but ended the class with an 84.7% (B).
I had Dr. Terry Spaise, she is very kind and helpful, although a bit old fashioned? She focuses a lot on grammar, paragraph spacing, and commas. We had to write 4 essays, the final being a position essay. The different between an A and an A- is the grammar and paragraph spacing, so pay attention to that. She is always willing to help and answer questions, and she let us submit rough drafts, which were very helpful. Just write the essays carefully and pay attention to the details. She cares about grammar. Those who complain about this probably did not try hard enough, it is not that complicated. She's a great professor
Taken with Lee Singh in Fall 2020. Four essays each worth 18% of grade, and "letters" worth 1% each is all the homework you get. She grades strictly according to the textbook u need to purchase, "The St. Martins Guide to Reading and Writing", so make sure to look at the essay examples and identify how you can model your essay off them. I had an extremely hard time doing well on the essays in the beginning and my lowest essay score was an 80%, so she grades PRETTY HARSHLY. However, this does not mean you cannot pass. Her final though, YOU NEED TO HAVE TIME MANAGEMENT FOR...she gives you the fourth essay and the final three weeks before they are due two days in a row. The finals consists of a 1500 word essay and two 500 word essays which have to do with the in class reading "The Glass Castle". Let me tell you...read the book the whole way through, or you WILL NOT pass this final. Basically, she assigns the fourth essay and 3 finals essays to complete in less than three weeks with no exceptions. ALSO...USE HER OFFICE HOURS...you get to read your drafts to her and she will give grammatical and content suggestions to improve your essays and also gives suggestions as to how you can use remaining days to refocus or bulk up what you are writing.
Paul AJ Beehler; would not recommend him. CON: Does 2-3 reading each week, assigned 3 different types of homework, grades fairly harsh on essays, have pop quizzes everyday when you come into class. PRO: very interactive in the beginning of class and all throughout, always offers office hours.
I took English001A with Kathleen Gurnett and it was absolutely terrible. The whole class is just reading a bunch of essays and writing essays. In class, all you ever do is reread what she told us before and teaches nothing. She is an extremely hard grader and super picky. If you have to take the class, I would suggest not taking it with her (if that is a option)
A TA will be teaching this class, I had 3 essays with an additional draft for essay 3 and a fine. I procrastinated lot and still ended up getting an A so it depends how the TA will grade.
I took this class with Professor Washburn. Her lectures aren't too bad and the workload is fair. We pretty much only wrote three essays, read "In Between the World and Me", and took the final, which was a timed essay. Honestly, I'd recommend taking English with her. She's really nice and understanding.
I took this class with Professor Gurnett during Spring 2021. She’s a tough grader and a huge part of the class is participation. I had read on Ratemyprofessor that she often accused students of plagiarism but decided to take the class anyway. I can definitely say that this is a problem but you can meet with her during office hours to discuss it.
Took it online(Spring'21) -Prof Anne Schnarr - small and easy quizzes, 3 essays (+1 final essay) easiest final , go to office hours for each essay(she will write the essay with you). Good luck!
Can be hard if your first language is not english. It also depend heavily on your professor or the graduate student hat is teaching you. But overall the content is there and train you to write more effectively. Just go to your office hour and visit ARC for writing support.
I had Professor Vasquez, she is very kind. She has a class critique structure such that you could see how other people reflect on different essays from your classmates.
Make sure to start essays earlier on! Apply strategies professors mention in your essays.
Pretty easy class tbh. I had Akshay Ganesh. We only had one book to read and he went through it during many classes so it was pretty easy. Essay prompts are okay as well, only difficulty is time management imo.
Had Professor Inyang for online class. It was easy and just required some readings. She was really nice and accommodating for everyone. She didn't give us quizzes because we didn't have time, so be careful for any future classes. Make sure you participate in the class.
Easy class 4 essays.
I took it with colin innes, he's a very easy professor. We had 4 essays, two books to read. 2/4 essays + the final were about the books.
Albert Anthony grades very hard and has it out for his students. If he does not like your opinion he will fall you even though you put in the time and effort.
I had Dr. Acker, honestly super nice and helpful. There is no hw, only 3 essays and some classwork. Workload is easily manageable as long as you don't procrastinate on essays. His essay outlines are really helpful and tell you exactly what he is looking for. His corny jokes and stories are somewhat enjoyable. Overall 10/10 professor.
I had Karen Polster. I hate writing so I biased to more difficultly. Required 4 essays and a group final film presentation. Max score on essay is 95%. Lowest is 80%. Easy to pass almost impossible to get an A since her standard for A is 95%. A- 90-95%
Really depends on who your professor or TA is! Make sure to take advantage of office hours to get feedback on essays, since they will be the main part of your grade.
All depends on the teacher. My teacher made it extremely essay, reading wasn't required but I recommend skimming but don't read the full book because it's a waste of time. I got a B+ with out trying and my final was a presentation on a movie that I didn't watch and did it within 30 minutes before class and got an A.
basic english class but difficult to get an A in due to majority of grades being from essays. Depends on your teacher a lot but mine didnt give any low grades but very few high ones on essays.
Kathleen Gurnett was my professor, just be careful with her as she's either super nice or super mean to you.
Took w/ Mr. Pfirrman-Pugh (PhD student). Very sweet, funny, understanding, and helpful guy. Everyone in my class only had nice things to say about him. I enjoyed the in-class discussions. There are dedicated lecture times to do peer review, then get feedback from the teacher. There was often a second round of peer reviews. Just put in the effort and you'll be fine. 4 essays with increasing difficulty, and a final (he gave us the prompt beforehand).
I had Dr. Van Zandt. She is really understanding and told us exactly what the final was on. However, I felt that on my essays she sometimes had certain requirements in grading that I did not understand. I recommend writing your essays early and meeting with her twice for each essay before you turn them in, once to get all the feedback as she reads it, and the second for her to basically check it and ensure it fits her requirements so you'll get an A.
I had Emily Doyle and she was literally the best. She gave great feedback and was so helpful!
The difficulty depends on what professor you have and how they decide to teach/grade the class. Had it with Hepler and he's honestly a tough grader but has a lot of interesting conversations. There's 3 hand written essays, 2 typed papers, multiple quizzes (one every class), journal entries, and a final exam. It was okay for me since I don't struggle with writing much, but others I knew in the class had a hard time getting good grades on the essays and papers. There's a secret curve at the end of the quarter and I ended with an A.
Took this first quarter of my freshman year (Fall 2023) with Potter. He was an interesting prof as my first experience with a college prof. The class itself really wasn't that hard but your grade us heavily dictated depending on your prof. He did allow infinite revisions but I ended up only revising 2 out of my 4 papers only because he gave me a D on my first paper and C on my second (revised them to B). You most likely won't get an A in his class unless he really likes your writing so a B is as good as I got. The final was online and a timed write but fairly easy. Thankfully no class novel only occassional reading from a textbook. Better experience than 1B but still boring and felt somewhat useless.
Idk if this was my particular prof (Emily Mulvihill is such a sweetheart) but there were three main essays with a fourth essay that acted as the final exam/project. One was a narrative, two were typical essays w/ some research, and the final essay was a choice between the two essay types and another one. A LOT easier than ENGL04, so don't be worried if u climbed ur way outta hell like me :)
I had Mr. d'Annibale. Very kind and supportive teacher who genuinely cares about your grade. If you took AP lang and did well, this class is easier. I personally was able to procrastinate and still get high 90s on all the essays. He quizzes based on readings but you can SparkNote them. Overall, very chill class.
